ALAYMA 2014 Chat Reactions
January 31, 2014 by Lisa
It was a good year for squirrels
Jen: and a good year for Floras!
Lisa: yes. I haven’t read Flora and the Flamingo but I could see Ulysses’ Flora attempting to dance with a flamingo
Jen: really? I think she’d be too cynical
Lisa: well, if her mother stuffed her into a tutu…
and there was a pink bird nearby…
soooooo, anything surprise you about this year’s ALA youth media awards?
Lisa: Rose Under Fire winning the Schneider Family Book Award!
Jen: Navigating Early winning a Printz honor
unexpected age group
after all the Newbery awards for books with an older readership
like Jacob Have I Loved
Jen: that’s from the 80s. Thirty years ago, mind you!
As much as I like Flora, I was a bit sad the Newbery winner wasn’t an undiscovered dark horse winner that emerged out of obscurity, only to live up to its hype, like Moon Over Manifest in 2012.
Lisa: well, there’s Paperboy, which I haven’t read
I predict a long line at the library, which probably didn’t order enough copies
Personally, I’m shocked Boxers & Saints didn’t get anything–and I haven’t even read it yet!
Jen: yeah, can a book be too edgy to win?
Lisa: or maybe, too confusing because it’s 2 books in 1?
the way they split the faces on the cover, which line up when you put the two volumes side by side
Lisa: hmm. now I want it to win something just so we can see that happen
any more pending awards for 2013?
Lisa: the win i’m least surprised about is P.S. Be Eleven for the CSK Award
Jen: For CSK’s Illustrator Award, did Brian Collier win two years in a row?
Lisa: yeah, and Kadir Nelson got an honor again
Jen: It’s like the US ice dancing teams’ rankings at Nationals. Hasn’t budged in years.
Lisa: really glad I read Midwinterblood, the Printz winner
it’s a very nontraditional kind of YA
Jen: how so?
Lisa: most of the characters are adults or young kids
Jen: is there at least one teen the reader is supposed to latch on to?
Lisa: um…it’s a series of short stories
that’s hard to answer
Jen: it’ll be a while. I imagine the number of requests on Midwinterblood has grown exponentially since the announcements
Lisa: you’ll also need to read it for Battle of the Kids’ Books!
which is the next book event to look forward to
which means Boxers & Saints could still win!
maybe we’ll see that split awards sticker after all
Lisa, there are no winners in Boxers & Saints
